Domain Name?  Check.  Hosting solution? Check.  Web knowledge?  Check.  So why did I still have trouble figuring out how to get everything working together?  I’ve written web pages, I’ve created software solutions, I’ve written manuals to help other people complete tech related tasks.  But this process brought me to a screeching halt.  Not for long – but I sure wasn’t expecting it.  I’ve been putting off setting up a site because, really, how hard could it be?  It was supposed to be the easiest step in setting myself up online.  And, to be fair, I did work it all out – which you already know since you’re reading this post – but it was just a little more complicated than I thought it might be.  What finally worked for me?  Here are the steps I took:

  1. Purchased Domain Name from Go Daddy in May, 2010.
  2. Signed up for hosting at Bluehost in February, 2011.  (I know, I know, quite the time lag.  It was actually the renewal notice for my domain names that triggered this setup.  I realized I’d had them for almost a year and still hadn’t done anything with them.)
  3. Logged in to Go Daddy and changed the Named Servers for my domain name to the one’s used at Bluehost.
  4. Waited a couple of hours for the Named Servers change to take effect.
  5. Installed WordPress manually.  The book I was sort of following said it would be good to know what the 1-click installs did – not sure I agree with that one yet.  I’ll have to try the 1-click solution before I decide.

After completing the WordPress setup, here I am, creating my first post.  So far so good.  Next!
